I don’t even want to admit that my child is old enough to be interested in reading. Why can’t she still be interested in just eating cheerios?
Madisyn has always been like a sponge and loves to absorb learning materials and keeps asking for more. I do allow her to play her V-Smile and Leapster, but she does not spend loads of time on those things as I do not want her to just learn by some electronic whiz thing.
I strongly believe when I chose to be a mom, that I was making a commitment to help her understand, to teach her, to motivate her… etc. Not just drop the ball and have an electronic teach her. It just irritates me the more I hear of parents these days just dropping the ball and putting them behind electronics to teach them when as a parent that is what WE are suppose to do. Yes, its fine to have some electronics and let the children have some down time because believe me I know moms need that 10 to 15 minute cool-down period during the day.
When I realized Madisyn was starting to sound out words and was really eager to learn how to read, I went looking and researching for a tool that I could help her with. I came across the Bob Books.
These have been the coolest books to read and it really keeps Madisyn’s attention too. She loves looking at the funny illustrations too and she now knows that this can help her sound out the words.
This is a set of books that comes with groups. Each group has a set of 4 books in that group. Each word you learn in the books, you carry on to the next group set. You should just see the glow and smile on Madisyn’s face when she realizes she has read a whole book by herself. Not only is she happy, but I am getting to see every moment of this priceless time and I can proudly say I helped my child learn to read. It doesn’t get any better than that.

I agree. Although Nick has learned some good things from some of his cartoons the bulk of his learning has been from basic parenting…like reading with him.
I’m actually buying some preschool material for this coming year since he’ll be home from “school/therapy” with me. If it goes well I fully intend on homeschooling him…which means I really will be his teacher!

I had never heard of these books until my friend discovered them for her son who’s in kindergarten. She loves them! 🙂
